Complete Disregard For The Audience

I’ve only seen Van twice in my lifetime; recently on 12 Oct 2022 in Phoenix, and in Ft. Lauderdale on 30 Dec 1996. There are three things one must be aware of before attending a Van concert: (1) He will not be performing an evening of ‘Greatest Hits’, (2) He will most likely alter that arrangements of the hits that he does play, and (3) He does not interact with the audience. Although this is not uncommon for Van, it still gives one pause when attending his live shows. The ranking I gave of 3 out of 5 is for the overall band performance and Van’s solid vocals. I consider that, at 77 years old, it may be easier and less taxing on Van’s voice to sing more up-tempo renditions of his ballads, as opposed to the sustaining nuances that a mellow track would command. Part of what makes a concert a fun experience is seeing the band enjoying themselves, feeding off the audience, and sharing that fun with all of us. If anything, these shows are the exact opposite of that, and that’s too bad. The bands that he assembles are typically top-notch musicians, and the performances of the material are stellar. The sad part (in this authors opinion), and bordering on unprofessionalism, is Van’s obviously visible ‘scolding’ of musicians that make an error. He turns to them with distain, and often throws his arms up in the air. Why? Save that for behind the scenes, if at all. I just think it’s rude. He did this twice (that I could see) during the recent show. Stop it! As much as I love 95% of Van’s entire catalog, it is nothing less than disheartening to not hear at least a reasonable selection of the songs that most attendees are laying their hard-earned cash down to see. Yes, I know all about “the artist doesn’t want to be pigeon-holed into playing blah, blah, blah”, but let’s be a bit more realistic. With mixed audiences (some well into their 70’s and beyond), a bit more consideration to them is due; besides, they’re the ones that put you where you are. If you think the 25-year-olds are ogling for Van on Twitter, think again. If this ranking allowed for “halves”, I wouldn’t have gone above 2.5. I’m thinking Van’s too old to change his ways, so I wouldn’t look for any drastic improvements in these areas going forward. For his sake, I hope he can continue to obtain/retain musicians with such talents, as I can’t imagine their experiences on the road with him to be much better than what the audiences experience at these shows.
